Learning Web Design: A Review

The book I recommend that will help you get a bigger picture of web design is Learning Web Design: A Beginner’s Guide to (X)HTML, Style Sheets (CSS), and Web Graphics by Jennifer Niederst Robbins. This book is the first book on web design I ever bought. Up until I read this book and completed its tutorials, my ‘self-education’ in web design was rather disjointed. Learning Web Design drew all my previous knowledge together and filled gaps in my web design knowledge that I didn’t know existed, such as how to prepare images for the web and what is involved in launching your site.

The fact that Jennifer has taught web design at the Massachusetts College of Art is evident. The style of writing is easy to understand and the content is organised in a logical way. There are plenty of examples and the exercises and quizzes at the end of each chapter make sure you don’t move on to the next chapter without understanding the main points and being able to put them into practice. The exercise materials are downloadable from the book’s website so you can practice styling content that looks like an actual web page.

If you read each chapter and work through all the exercises you’ll definitely finish the book confident you can design a standards compliant website and get it ‘up and running’. You’ll  finish with a basic framework of what is involved in designing a website and some direction on how to further hone your newly developed web skills.
