Learning to draw in Adobe Illustrator

I’ve been gradually learning how to draw in Illustrator with my Bamboo graphics tablet (last year’s birthday present). This drawing of a grumpy looking old man I made with the help of this tutorial. I’m going to need a lot more practice if I am going to be able to draw cartoons like this without a tutorial to guide me.

What I found most frustrating about learning to draw in Illustrator was using the Pen Tool. I don’t think it should be called the ‘Pen Tool’ since it made me wonder if there was something wrong with me because I couldn’t seem to get the hang of it. Everyone knows how to use a pen, right? In my frustration, I did some Google searching and found a blog post, ‘Illustrator Pen Tool Exercises’ which has a downloadable .Ai file made especially to help you learn how to trace using the pen tool. I highly recommend it if you are experiencing the same frustration.

Here a couple more I have done. (If you click on the image it will take you to the tutorial.)
