Adding ‘Home’ to your WordPress Navigation Menu

The method for adding ‘Home’ to your WordPress Navigation Menu is different depending upon your ‘Reading Settings’ (in ‘Settings’). If you have your Front page set to display your latest posts then read the first set of instructions. If you have your Front page set to be a ‘static page’ (ie, a page you have created and by default has no posts), then skip to the second set of instructions.

1. Adding  ‘Home’ to your menu when the Front page is displaying your latest posts:

If you have your Front page set to display your latest posts, and you want to give it a ‘Home’ navigation menu, you’ll need to create a custom menu in Appearances>Menu. First you need to create a menu by giving it a name (I’ve named mine ‘Main Navigation Menu’) and then  ‘Create Menu’.

Create a menu

Then you’ll need to make sure your theme uses this new menu by selecting it in ‘Theme Locations’. Here I have selected it to be used as my ‘Primary Menu’.

Select menu to use

Make sure your WordPress site uses this menu by selecting it in 'Theme Locations'

Next, we can create your Home menu item. You can do this by adding a ‘Custom Link’. Just add your homepage URL, label it ‘Home’ and click ‘Add to Menu’.

Then select all the pages and/or categories you also want to be in your menu.

Once you have your list of menu items, you can reorder them by dragging and dropping them. (You can even create a dropdown menu by nesting menu items within their parent menu item.) Make sure ‘Home’ is at the top of your list and then ‘Save Menu’. Now go back to your WordPress site and test out your new menu!

2. Adding  ‘Home’ to your menu when the Front page is a Static page:

If you your homepage is set to be a static Page in your Reading Settings, then adding ‘Home’ will be more straightforward. If you have created a page called ‘Home’ and selected that page to display as your ‘Front page’ in your Reading Settings, then the ‘Home’ menu will automatically appear in your navigation menu.

If you are creating a custom menu (in Appearances>Menus), adding ‘Home’ to your menu will be as simple as selecting it from your list of pages (assuming you have already created a page called ‘Home’), adding it to your menu and then dragging that ‘Home’ menu item to the top of your menu list. (See the previous set of instructions, for more step by step instructions on creating a custom menu).
